A proposal that is supported by more than 100 countries around the world that <strong>would help produce more doses in a shorter period of time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consequently, within the World Trade Organization, a number of countries have placed on the table a <strong>new proposal, known as the third way.<\/strong> Although the details are not yet known, what they are proposing is that <strong>the companies that own the patents and other companies with production capacity reach bilateral agreements<\/strong> to increase production.<\/p>\n<p>This alternative <strong>is not new<\/strong> (these agreement already exist) and <strong>control remains in the hands of the pharmaceutical industry<\/strong> which, so far, has demonstrated an inability to provide the response the pandemic requires.<\/p>\n<p>The contracts, which are confidential, <strong>would not oblige companies to share their knowledge<\/strong> and the new companies who become involved in the process could be limited to <strong>secondary or marginal tasks in the chain of production.<\/strong> <strong>Territorial restrictions<\/strong> could even be maintained (for example, that the company cannot produce vaccines for certain countries).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, 240 organisations from all over the world have sent <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CSOLetter_Dr.-Ngozi.pdf\"><strong>this open letter<\/strong><\/a> <\/span>to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the WTO, to express our concern with this latest development, <strong>which falls far short of a solution to the shortage of vaccines in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/CSOLetter_Dr.-Ngozi.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12456\" src=\"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot_2021-04-13-Microsoft-Word-CSOLetter_Dr-Ngozi-docx-CSOLetter_Dr-Ngozi-pdf.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot_2021-04-13-Microsoft-Word-CSOLetter_Dr-Ngozi-docx-CSOLetter_Dr-Ngozi-pdf.png 693w, https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screenshot_2021-04-13-Microsoft-Word-CSOLetter_Dr-Ngozi-docx-CSOLetter_Dr-Ngozi-pdf-248x300.png 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you may know, rich countries are blocking the temporary suspension (for the duration of the pandemic) of patents for vaccines and other medicines and technologies for Covid-19.
