{"id":12483,"date":"2021-04-21T15:39:32","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T13:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/?p=12483"},"modified":"2021-04-21T15:51:29","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T13:51:29","slug":"the-lost-decade-of-universal-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/en\/the-lost-decade-of-universal-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"The lost decade of universal healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>A<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> new REDER report <\/span>reviews the trajectory and current situation of Universal Healthcare in Spain, its essential contributions to society, and the need to recover it urgently.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Exactly nine years ago today, <strong>Spain was a model of public healthcare<\/strong>: it offered almost complete coverage to citizens, with high quality services at barely any cost (except a few modest co-payments) to patients. But on <strong>20 April 2012, the PP approved a law that ended this universal healthcare.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The PSOE reforms of 2018 sought to renew this universal nature of the healthcare system, but <strong>the truth is that even today, there are numerous cases of exclusion.<\/strong> The Government\u2019s recent pledge to remedy these failings by means of a new law is promising, but it has been delayed for far too long.<\/p>\n<p>The situation needs to change now. <strong>Universal Health Coverage has been shown to improve the health of the population, to be a key factor in economic growth and redistribution, and in social cohesion.<\/strong> Additionally, it is part of the United Nation\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals and a cornerstone of international policy.<\/p>\n<p>These aspects -which pave the road to Universal Healthcare- are part of the conclusions and recommendations of <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><em><strong>\u201c<\/strong><\/em><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/InformeSanidadUniversal2021_INGLES.pdf\"><strong><em>Nobody is safe till the whole world is safe\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><em><strong>, <\/strong><\/em><strong>the new REDER report<\/strong> (a network that defends universal access to healthcare, of which Salud por Derecho is a member) that we present today.
