At Salud por Derecho, we welcome the announcement by Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez to increase Spain\u2019s contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to \u20ac145 million for the 2026\u20132028 period. This represents a rise from the \u20ac130 million pledged in the previous funding cycle.<\/p>\n
The announcement, made during the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, marks a decisive and much-needed step at a particularly challenging time for global health. The Global Fund is currently entering a new replenishment cycle, aiming to raise $18 billion. According to its estimates, this funding could save 23 million lives, cut mortality from these three diseases by 64%, and prevent 400 million new infections. In the last replenishment, the Global Fund secured just over $14 billion.<\/p>\n
With this pledge, Spain joins Norway, which was the first European country to announce its contribution in this new cycle.<\/p>\n
Although the amount falls short of the \u20ac200 million that Salud por Derecho has long advocated for, we recognize the government\u2019s effort in a difficult economic context and positively value the increase over the previous cycle.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis announcement sends a clear signal of Spain\u2019s commitment to global health and to the millions of people who rely on Global Fund programs for access to essential treatment and services,\u201d said Vanessa L\u00f3pez, Executive Director of Salud por Derecho. \u201cWe hope this decision will strengthen Spain\u2019s leadership and encourage other countries to step up their contributions in such a crucial funding round.\u201d<\/p>\n
At a time when international funding is facing cutbacks\u2014led by reductions in the United States\u2014Spain\u2019s commitment stands out as an act of responsibility and solidarity that could make a life-changing difference for millions.<\/p>\n
