Today, we would like to highlight the experience of one of our current interns, Patricio Elizondo, and share his reflections on the right to health.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or intern at Salud por Derecho, do not hesitate to <a href=\"http:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/ytuque\/\">contact us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the\u00a0most important thing you have learned about Salud por Derecho since beginning\u00a0your internship? What do you value most about your internship\u00a0experience?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Patricio: <\/em>There are many things I really like about Salud por Derecho.\u00a0Here are some of them:<\/p>\n<p>* Salud por Derecho is a relatively small organization, so\u00a0what you do matters. You don\u2019t just work on petty, secretarial tasks; you\u00a0actually get to do real\u00a0work on real projects. I\u2019ve really appreciated the fact\u00a0that the staff at Salud por Derecho trusts interns and values their work.<\/p>\n<p>* Everyone at Salud por Derecho is extremely friendly and\u00a0helpful. You would be hard-pressed to find a better working environment.<\/p>\n<p>* Salud por Derecho has a great mission. It\u2019s really\u00a0motivating to know that your work is going to have a real impact on people\u2019s\u00a0lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the right to health mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Patricio:<\/em> No human right is more important than the right to health. The\u00a0right to health is a basic human right, meaning that no other rights can be\u00a0enjoyed in its absence.\u00a0It is impossible for someone to exercise their right to\u00a0freedom of speech, for instance, if they are dying from AIDS or tuberculosis. If\u00a0you care about human rights\u00a0at all, you have to start by promoting the right to\u00a0health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do you think advocacy and awareness-raising related\u00a0to the right to health are important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Patricio:<\/em> I believe that the world today has the technological\u00a0capability to solve the most pressing problems of global health. We already\u00a0know how to prevent and\/or\u00a0treat the diseases that cause the highest number of\u00a0deaths. Vaccines for many diseases already exist; we just need to figure out\u00a0how to get them to the people\u00a0that need them. We need to work on how we\u00a0organize and distribute our resources, and that\u2019s what political advocacy is\u00a0all about. It\u2019s about helping the\u00a0government organize and distribute resources\u00a0in a way that is more conducive to the common good. Political advocacy is an\u00a0integral part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anything else you might want to add?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Patricio:<\/em> I really encourage anyone who\u2019s interested in political\u00a0advocacy, human rights, or health policy to do an internship at Salud por\u00a0Derecho.
