New Actors and New Funding Instruments: From Public Private Partnerships to the Financial Transaction Tax.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Food for Thought<\/b> is a concept suggesting that there are certain issues worth meditating and reflecting upon to feed the creation of new ideas. With this idea in mind, Salud por Derecho launched its first lunch debate \u201cFood for Thought: Fueling new ideas in Development Cooperation.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n

The goal of this event was to facilitate dialogue among a small number of actors from different fields<\/b> who usually do not coincide but have common interests in key areas such as public health and global development, R&D policy in Spain and Europe, human rights and the ethical and regulatory public policies surrounding development cooperation. During this first gathering, 18 people with diverse backgrounds participated in the conversation such as national parliamentarians, academics, economists, business school leaders, civil society and social entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

The main ideas that emerged during the event were:<\/b><\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The existing need to accelerate the process for creating a law on patronage based on consensus.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The importance of implementing a concrete incentive mechanism to encourage private funding, especially directed toward certain fields related to biomedical innovation.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The importance of ensuring that a percentage of the proceeds from a possible Financial Transaction Tax be allocated toward international cooperation.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The need to establish an accountability framework which reflects the division of responsibilities between the actors who have a role in the future of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The emphasis that although there is a need to promote increased funding for cooperation from the private sector, this cannot replace the responsibility of the government that exists in this area.<\/p>\n
