{"id":6979,"date":"2013-10-09T13:00:50","date_gmt":"2013-10-09T11:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/?p=6979"},"modified":"2016-10-26T15:59:48","modified_gmt":"2016-10-26T13:59:48","slug":"48-european-civil-society-organisations-endorse-eu-manifesto-on-global-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saludporderecho.org\/en\/48-european-civil-society-organisations-endorse-eu-manifesto-on-global-health\/","title":{"rendered":"48 European civil society organisations endorse EU Manifesto on Global Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>\u201cAchieving the highest attainable standard of<b>\u00a0<\/b>health for all<b>\u00a0<\/b>is an integral part of thriving societies, a cornerstone of well performing economies, and a shared principle of European democracies and their partner countries\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In the run up to the European elections of 22-25 May 2014, global health activists around the European Union joined forces\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghadvocates.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Civil-Society-Manifesto-on-Global-Health-EU-ELECTIONS-2014.pdf\">to cast their messages<\/a>\u00a0to European political parties while they are busy defining political priorities for the next legislature.<\/p>\n<p>In a little less than nine months, European citizens will choose their representatives in the European Parliament, which will in turn define the political direction of the Union. Indeed, for the first EU elections since the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty, the new European Parliament will also be able to elect the President of the European Commission for the period 2014-2018.<\/p>\n<p>In order to inform European political parties on the importance of improving universal access to timely, affordable, accessible and quality health information and services, Global Health Advocates developed a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghadvocates.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Civil-Society-Manifesto-on-Global-Health-EU-ELECTIONS-2014.pdf\">Global Health Manifesto<\/a>\u00a0with inputs and endorsement from 48 civil society organisations working in this field across the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Together, we believe that investing in global health is a moral and economic imperative enshrined in the core values of the European Union and its vision as a global actor. The one-pager manifesto presents our main political messages and cross-cutting recommendations as a guide to the European Parliament and other Institutions\u2019 external action and global health policies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure\u00a0<b>adequate and coherent financing<\/b>\u00a0<b>for global health<\/b>\u00a0across the EU policy spectrum:\n<ul>\n<li>Allocate 20% of all EU development assistance to health and basic education;<\/li>\n<li>Invest in research and development for new and improved prevention, diagnostic tools and treatments, currently under-supplied by the market to fight urgent global health threats;<\/li>\n<li>Explore the potential for innovative development financing mechanisms and use the Financial Transaction Tax as an opportunity to increase budgets for international development assistance;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ensure the political dialogue on the\u00a0<b>future international development agenda<\/b>\u00a0prominently features health as a key goal of sustainable development<\/li>\n<li>Ensure EU political, legal and\u00a0<b>commercial agreements do not become barriers<\/b>\u00a0to access to lifesaving medicines<\/li>\n<li>Ensure the\u00a0<b>development of an action oriented and time bound global health strategy<\/b>\u00a0to deliver on EU commitments on global health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All together, we will campaign at national
