Today, together with other European civil society organizations —including Médecins Sans Frontières, Health Action International, Aidsfonds, Global Health Advocates and Médecins du Monde France— we have sent an open letter to the SANT Committee of the European Parliament with our recommendations on the Critical Medicines Act (CMA). We are taking this step at a decisive moment, coinciding with two important milestones in the legislative process: today’s EPSCO Council meeting, where Member States are discussing their position, and the upcoming vote on amendments in the European Parliament, which will define the mandate for the final negotiations with the Commission and the Council in the trilogue.
The letter underscores that the CMA represents an opportunity to strengthen the resilience of the European pharmaceutical system and to ensure an equitable supply of essential medicines. However, this objective can only be fully achieved if the legislation incorporates strong public-interest safeguards, greater transparency and concrete measures that guarantee equitable access both within and beyond the European Union.
